UPDATE: in all fairness to the Toronto Star, I have just learned that the reason I didn't hear back from them re our request to revert to Caroline's puzzles is that the person I was trying to contact there retired a month ago. I am now in contact with someone else, and have been assured that the matter will be given to their Syndication manager for consideration.

Widgets are missing!

At the top of my blog site is the following:

f you wish to be notified of new posts, please enter your email address below and click "Submit". If you have a question regarding an answer, please email me at phm@execulink.com

The place to enter your email address, and the SUBMIT button have both disappeared.

On the right hand side there was a pageview counter, which now appears only as

Total Pageviews

with no count showing. Although I can still get the pageview count from another source (it's now 70,636), I have no idea why these widgets are malfunctioning/disappearing.

The problem seems to be widespread and affecting a number of sites, and Google is purportedly working on it, but if anyone has any solutions/ideas for this, please let me know.

Paul.

Every cryptic crossword composer has his or her own "style" in setting clues, and, as solvers, we get used to the style of a particular composer, like Caroline Andrews. It is very difficult to adapt to the "style" of another composer, like the one who made up today's Guardian cryptic. As well, the "Britishisms" involved may be very unfamiliar to Canadians, an example being today's 9 Across involving FI driver James Hunt (who died in 1993) and British MP Jeremy Hunt, with the further convolution of asking which (witch reported)  Hunt that it is. 16 Across has "evening wear" = dj, which few here would recognize as "dinner jacket". And a large number of very complex clues, like 20 Down, which parses as

ruler = SATRAP
predecessor of Sun...the day before Sunday is Saturday = SAT
King                                                                              =   R
one                                                                                =   A
with power                                                                     =   P

I did submit to the Star the list of names of those who would like to see the return of Caroline, but have received no answer. Will query them again today.
